This post is all about the things no one tells you about pregnancy.
There are a lot of things no one tells you about pregnancy. Everyone’s pregnancy is different and that is one of the things that people DO tell you. Its hard to compare pregnancies when they can be so different for everyone. For instance, my sister, Kayla, was very sick for a long time during her pregnancy. I was not. I experienced some nausea for sure, but not like Kayla did. She was actively throwing up until she was about 20 weeks pregnant. I rarely threw up but did experience nausea and indigestion early on. However, it was quick to pass for me. While everyone is eager to share what they did experience in their own unique pregnancy, here are some of the things I personally experienced that no one warned me about!
You may not feel pregnant all the time at first
After the initial nausea faded, I really didn’t feel pregnant most times. The baby isn’t to the point that you can really feel the flutters until about 16-20 weeks. So up until I started feeling my baby move, I felt pretty normal. Everyone always asks how you’re feeling, and I always told people I barely feel pregnant for the most part!
That not sleeping starts before the baby comes
One thing you will most definitely hear while pregnant is “Get plenty of sleep while you still can!” What they don’t tell you is that insomnia is common during pregnancy. Not only are your hormones changing but sometimes it can just be plain impossible to get comfortable in bed with your new accessory bump. There are certainly things you can do to help you sleep better while pregnant but catching all the z’s before baby comes isn’t as easy as it may seem!
All the yucky bodily changes that happen
Its easy to talk about all of the socially acceptable changes that occur during pregnancy but what about things like increased discharge, skin tags, darkening nipples and constipation? No one likes to talk about all the yucky parts of pregnancy, but these are things that can throw you for a loop because they aren’t talked about as much! I personally got several new skin tags. SKIN TAGS?!? Of all things, I never would have thought this was pregnancy related but surprise! Its sure is!
Increased discharge is also very common. I was to the point of changing undies twice a day. Some women actually use panty liners during pregnancy for this reason. Darkening nipples are a natural part of the many changes your breasts go through, and constipation is just unavoidable with the increased pressure and less space for our digestive systems. Digestion slows down entirely and is a big reason for heart burn as well!
If you’ve had COVID, your sense of smell might change more than normal
Everyone knows that when you get pregnant, your sense of smell changes quite a bit. You become much more sensitive to smells, and it can even make your morning sickness worse. What I did NOT know, is that if you’ve had COVID in the past, it might affect your smell even more than normal. Before I even knew I was pregnant, I started experiencing something called parosmia. Basically, everything around me smelled like hot garbage. It was AWFUL. After doing some research, I found out that becoming pregnant can trigger post-covid parosmia. You can read more about it here. If you have had COVID in the past and find out you are pregnant, don’t be surprised if you start experiencing some out-of-the-norm side effects!
Nosebleeds are common
Nosebleeds are something you may want to get used to the idea of. With your blood volume increasing, some of our smaller blood vessels can burst more easily. Exhibit A- the blood vessels in your nose! Not everyone gets full on nose bleeds. It may look more like blood on your tissue when you blow rather than blood streaming down your face. Try to be gentle when blowing your nose!
You might not always enjoy baby movements
It sounds bad to think you might not like feeling your baby move, but sometimes those movements can feel more like cramps or gas than anything, especially in the beginning. Often called “quickening”, in the earlier stages of feeling baby move, I always explained it like a fish swimming or flopping around in my belly. Not the most comforting or warm and fuzzy feeling! Haha! Don’t feel bad if you don’t particularly enjoy some of those early movements!
