You will typically stay at least a night or two at the hospital after giving birth, and if you have a c-section, you could end up staying even longer. It may seem like overkill, but its best to be as prepared as possible. It’s always better to have too much, rather than too little. You will go through so much, emotionally and physically so you definitely want to make sure you feel as comfortable as you can during this time. These are the items I recommend packing, or at least considering, when making your pregnancy hospital bag checklist for delivery.

Toiletries
- Extra Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- Mouth wash
- Disposable razor
- Deodorant
- Travel bottles of shampoo and conditioner
- Bar of soap
- Body wash
- Flushable wipes
- Toilet paper from home
- Makeup remover
- Makeup remover cloths (These are my favorite)
- Waterproof mascara
- Dry shampoo
- Hairbrush
- Frida mom mesh underwear
- Frida mom instant maxi pads
- Regular maxi pads
The shower after giving birth is amazing. It makes you feel like a real person again. You definitely want to have all of your favorite toiletries to make that shower as enjoyable as possible. I recommend getting empty travel size bottles to fill with your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. from home. Bringing toilet paper from home is also a must! Everything is so sore after giving birth, the last thing you want is scratchy toilet paper.
Clothing
- Robe
- Comfy pajama set
- Large pair of comfy long pants
- Nursing bra x2
- Large, loose fitting undies
- Fuzzy socks with grips
- Slippers
Just think COMFORT. You want to pack all of your favorite comfy clothes. Nonslip socks are great to keep from falling on the tile floors in the hospital. Nursing bras are great when you are learning to nurse, if you decide to breastfeed. Lactation consultants and nurses will be in and out trying to help you figure it out, so these make it quick and easy to nurse and cover up again.

Day of
- Laptop & charger
- Makeup bag
- Exercise ball
- Medicine
- Body spray/perfume
- Pillow and blanket
There are several items you will want to bring that you use daily, and may not have multiples of. I recommend having a “day of” checklist ready to go so you can quickly pack your last minute items when you feel those first contractions, and make sure you’re not forgetting anything.
Miscellaneous
- Extra long charger
- Portable bluetooth speaker
- Bath towel
- Fan
- Snacks and drinks
- Camera, charger, and extra SD cards.
- Birth plan
- One dollar bills for vending machine
- Empty bag for all of the extras you will bring home
- Breast pump
I loved having an extra long charger that could easily reach the wall from my hospital bed. Bluetooth speakers are great for white noise to block out all of the commotion from the hospital at night, or for playing relaxing music during labor. I was lucky my hospital room had a fan in it, but not all of them do so if you need a fan on to sleep like I do, I recommend bringing one with you. You will also get lots of baby stuff, recovery supplies, and often flowers and gifts. Having an extra, empty bag to carry all of this stuff comes in handy.
A lot of posts I read say not to worry about bringing your breast pump, so I didn’t bring mine and I regretted it. My sister didn’t bring hers either, and we ended up taking it to her the second day she was there. I would recommend packing it just in case. If you don’t need it, no big deal. If you do, you’ll be glad you have it.
Baby’s Bag
- Two zipper footie outfits
- A few plain white onesies
- Three pairs of jammies
- Swaddle
- Diapers (If you have a preferred brand, mine was The Honest Company.)
- Outfits for newborn pictures
- Props for newborn pictures
- Announcement board
- Portable white noise machine
- A few different types of pacifiers
- Car seat
- Sign or cover for car seat that says “please do not touch”.
The hospital will provide most of the things you need for your new baby, including diapers, formula, swaddles, etc. The clothes are the most important thing, as they will give you pretty much everything else, but if you have preferences about diapers, wipes, formula, etc., I would recommend bringing those things with you.
Partners Bag
- Socks
- Underwear
- Shorts
- T-shirt
- Snacks and drinks
- Pillow and blanket
- Entertainment
- Long Charger
Labor can be long and boring at times, so I recommend bringing some kind of entertainment for your birthing partner. My water broke and I had to lay in a hospital bed while they tried to get contractions started for 26 hours before anything actually happened. I was glad I had my laptop so I could watch Netflix. I tried to convince my husband to bring his Playstation or Switch, but he refused because he wanted to be there for me at every moment. He didn’t realize it would be so boring at first!
I also recommend bringing lots of snacks and drinks for your birth partner. They will bring you meals, but you typically have to pay cash for meals for your partner, and the food at the hospital where I delivered was AWFUL. They do usually have vending machines, but the options are limited and expensive, so I recommend packing all of their favorite snacks ahead of time.
In the end, everyone is different so you may find some of these things excessive or you may think of thirty more items you need to bring. Either way, hopefully this list gives you a good start, and a lot of items to consider.
